James Harmon Day (1927 - 2012)

Obituary Nibley, UT –James Harmon Day, age 84, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family after suffering a massive heart attack June 24, 2012. James (Jimmy) was born September 3, 1927, the oldest child of Phoebe McConnell and Harmon Eastman Day. He graduated from Jordan High School where he served as Judge. Jim was drafted into the Army and served at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, as a surgical technician. He attended Utah State Agricultural College on the GI Bill. Jim married his sweetheart, Merle Joyce Brynolf, in the Salt Lake Temple December 17, 1948. Jim and Joyce have three daughters who are the joy of their lives, as are their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jim began his farming life at the tender age of five and continued until he was 71. Dayland Dairy was started with seven cows and a few young animals on Stokes Avenue in Draper. Jim showed his cattle at all of the local, state, and national shows. His heifer, "Peaches," was awarded the 1981 All American in Madison, Wisconsin, the highest national award. He served as a Director on the Federal Land Bank, and he and Joyce traveled and had some great times with the other directors. Jim served in many capacities in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including Sunday School President, 1st Counselor in the Bishopric, and High Councilman. Joyce and Jim were very civic minded and served the community for many years in the Lion's Club and Draper Days. The first Draper City Meeting was held within the walls of their home, and Jim served as a Draper City Councilman for six years. Jim served on the Salt Lake County Soil Conservation Committee. He was elected and served one term in the Utah State Legislature in 1967. After he retired and sold the farm, Jim and Joyce moved to Nibley, Utah. Jim spent his life serving his family and friends. He was a friend to the friendless, and always put others' needs ahead of his own.Jim is survived by his wife, Joyce, his three daughters Rolayne Day, Allyson Saunders (Bill), Marlene Griffiths (Wayne), 7 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren; his siblings Douglas (Joe), Norma Dunn (Roy), Rachel Patience, Delores Boberg (Jack), Evelyn Holmes (Robert), Henry (Barbara), Steven (Diana), Fred Greer (brother-in-law), and LaRayne Day (sister-in-law). Preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Ramona Greer, brother, Jack, and brother-in-law, Joe Patience.Special thanks for the doctors and staff of the Logan Regional Hospital for their loving and respectful care of our father and his family.Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 28, at 11 a.m. at the Mountain Point 7th Ward Chapel, 420 E. Stokes Ave., Draper. There will be a viewing Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Goff Mortuary, 8090 So. State, Midvale, and Thursday at the church from 9:30-10:45 a.m. Interment, Larkin Sunset Gardens.
